She assists her father writing and illustrating children's books, including their debut children's book, "Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Jar Mishap." Her contributions to the storyline were inspired by evening readings with her family of Milne and Shepard's 1926 classic, Winnie-the-Pooh. She uses a combination of tracing, sketching, and digital illustration software (Procreate and the Apple Pencil 2) in her books. She loves books, hockey, monkey bars, riding her bike, science, piano, and art.
How the Book Was Created
From the Authors and Illustrators: Christopher Carroll and Simone Carroll
Our journey began during family readings of the original 1926 Winnie-the-Pooh. Immersed in the world of Pooh, we were inspired to create a modern tale as a father-daughter duo that honors the beloved characters and stories of A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard.
Simone, three years old and learning to read when we started and five years old when we finished, was instrumental in shaping the book. After an evening of reading the original Pooh stories, we would brainstorm funny scenarios involving Pooh and his friends. "I have an idea!" Simone would scream. "Let's have Eeyore save Pooh with his tail!" "Let's make Christopher Robin wear a tie-dye t-shirt!"
The illustration process was a learning adventure. Simone began by tracing the original Pooh characters using a homemade lightbox crafted from shipping boxes, a clear storage bin cover, and a flashlight. We then digitized these sketches into a tablet, where her father, Christopher, put the finishing touches on her sketches.
With the help of a digital pencil, online tutorials, and plenty of practice, we eventually did all our illustrating on the tablet. As Simone grew older and practiced her digital illustration, she took on progressively more responsibility for the illustrations. She went from helping color in characters and guiding the layout to designing and drawing her own illustrations such as many of the flowers and plants, swans, fish, and honey jars. Background illustrations of trees, flowers, furniture, and Pooh's carpet were based on photographs Simone took of items in our home and garden, which we imported into our tablet and illustrated.
We are thrilled to share our passion for Winnie-the-Pooh with you in Winnie-the-Pooh and the Honey Jar Mishap. We hope our tale brings as much joy and inspiration to you as the original stories have for us.
